Travel Tuesday: Reykjavik
Posted on Tuesday, 20 January 2015
Iceland is one of the most beautiful and coolest countries in the world. Reykjavik is the capitol and largest city in Iceland, although it's actually not that large there are many things to see and do and a majority of the tours depart from the centre.
Here's a list of Reykjavik musts!
- Check out the Lebowski Bar! It doesn't matter if you're a Lebowski fan or not, this little burger joint and bar has a great atmosphere. If you're after McDonalds or any other fast food chain you're out of luck! In Reykjavik you'll only find Subway. If you're feeling adventurous there are many restaurants along the high street that offer whale and puffin for dinner!
- Some of the best musicians hail from Iceland so if you're a music lover you must go and check out this amazing record store 12 Tonar. They also give away free espresso and tea.
- The Hallgrímskirkja church is one of the cities main landmarks which can be seen from almost everywhere. For 600ISK you can go to the top for stunning views of Reykjavik. Although you could probably get away with not paying if you're on a budget, no one was monitoring the entrance or exit when I visited.
- At night visit the Imagine Peace tower, a collaboration with Yoko Ono. The tower of light beams have Imagine Peace inscribed on the wall in 24 different languages.
- The Harpa Conference and Concert centre is one of the newest additions to city. Sitting at the edge of the water this beautifully designed building is quite a sight. Not too far down from the Harpa is the Sun Voyager which resembles a Viking ship.
- While you're down this part of Reykjavik make sure you stop by the re-established old harbour. From here you can go on scooter tours, and book whale and puffin tours.
- Check out the National Museum of Iceland for all of Iceland's interesting history. There are also dozens more museums and art galleries around the city which are just as interesting. The Icelandic folk love their arts and culture.
- If you have some time to kill on the weekend check out the Kolaportid flea market. Inside you'll find anything and everything. Make sure you pick up a delicious Icelandic hot dog nearby from Baejarins Beztu Pylsur!
- Some tours that leave from Reykjavik (through Iceland Excursions) that I recommend you go on are The Northern Lights tour. You'll get a delicious cup of hot chocolate and yummy Icelandic Donut. The Golden Circle tour will take you through Þingvellir National Park, to Gullfoss watefall and Geysir hydrothermal area. The Blue Lagoon tour will get you into one of the most famous geothermal spa's in the world. If you're a Game of Thrones fan make sure you head out on one of many tours around the country visiting all the famous filming spots.
If you're brave enough to face the cold, i'm talking extreme cold, head over in the middle of winter. There's ice and snow everywhere and the days are short and the nights are long, but it makes everything look even more spectacular!
