Review: Pitch Perfect 2

Posted on Friday, 8 May 2015

The Bellas are back, pitches.
OK first of all, i had no idea Elizabeth Banks directed and produced this highly anticipated sequel. My brain is still having trouble trying to process this information...

*spoilers ahead*
Last time we saw the Barden Bellas they were on a mission to take down their enemies The Treblemakers at Nationals. This time, the three-time defending US acapella champions, find themselves in hot water after Fat Amy's (Rebel Wilson) hilarious wardrobe malfunction infront of the president and the first lady. Muffgate causes sponsors to pull out of acapella events and a lot of bad press for the Barden Bellas, so the girls are forced to suspend all of their activities including recruiting new 'sisters'.
Of course this little situation doesn't stop the Bellas, as they discover a loophole and a way to get themselves back on top. All they have to do is win the world championships in Copenhagen, something that no US team has ever done, which also means defeating their new rivals from Germany Das Sound Machine.
Pitch Perfect 2 sees all all your favourite Bellas return: Fat Amy, Beca (Anna Kendrick) Stacie (Alexis Knapp), Chloe (Brittany Snow) whose purposely failed classes so she can stay in the Bellas, Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), Cynthia-Rose (Ester Dean) and brief appearances by Bumper (Adam DeVine), Jesse (Skylar Astin), Aubrey (Anna Camp), Gail (Elizabeth Banks), John (John Michael Higgins), and Benji (Ben Platt). We're also introduced to a brand new Bella Emily (Hailee Steinfield), her mum Katherine (Katey Sagal) a Bella Legacy and the frontman and woman for Das Sound Machine played by Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Flula Borg. Members from The Green Bay Packers and Snoop Dogg make unexpected but hilarious cameos, with one of my favourite mashups being Beca and Snoop's remix of 'Winter Wonderland' for his christmas album. She gets this opportunity when she finally fulfils her dream of working at a record label. The label scenes provide a lot of humour, but i felt like they were only squished in to try tie up the Beca wanting to be a music producer story line. I was also disappointed that some of the sub-plots didn't have a satisfying close, one being the rivalry between the Bellas and Das Sound Macine. The one thing i did love during the (rushed) ending was the Bellas awesome girl power winning performance at the world championships which included another hand clapping routine (perhaps a tribute to the now iconic 'Cup Song') and a pretty catchy original song 'Flashlight'.
The enormous success of Pitch Perfect must have put a lot of pressure on the writers and unfortunately, like most sequels, Pitch Perfect 2 just isn't as great as the original, with a lot of the humour this time round feeling a little too forced. Overall, Elizabeth Banks did a good job and i think fans will love the movie,  it is definitely worth checking out.

Pitch Perfect 2 is released nationwide May 15th!

Review: Charli XCX (Auckland)

Posted on Wednesday, 6 May 2015

Steve Dykes for iHeartRadio.
When Charli XCX was announced as part of Australia's 'Groovin the Moo' lineup, i had my fingers crossed for a NZ sideshow. Unfortunately there was no sideshow announcement, there was however a free IHeartRadio show!
Charli came out looking like the 90's had thrown up all over her and i loved it! She rocked sunglasses, matching sparkling zebra print crop and skirt, and chunky platform heels. Her equally amazing all girl band were dressed in silver sequin clothing and holographic shoes. Where can i sign up to be part of this tour?
From the second Charli came out she put in SO much energy to the show, you don't even want to look anywhere else because one minute she's rocking out with a giant inflatable guitar and then she's rolling around on the floor dressed as a cake and rapping along to 50 cent (it was her bassist Vicky's birthday), you never know what she's going to do next. I'm surprised she could still sing flawlessly while she was running around, and that she could bust all those moves without falling in those massive heels!
It was just really unfortunate that the crowd didn't show her the same amount of enthusiasm, it was probably one of the more duller crowds i've seen which is odd because i don't understand how you can not move to Charli XCX. Maybe it would have been different if the room was full of her fans and not a mix of people who only entered to win tickets just for the hell of it? Or maybe Kiwi crowds just suck, probably the latter. She also confessed she was starting to get bored of performing the same thing every night, and at some points i could see that. I don't think the unenthusiastic crowd helped.
But i hope the lack of crowd enthusiasm won't put Charli off visiting New Zealand again, she's such an incredible performer who deserves a lot more recognition than she gets! and so do her band! The world needs more of these four amazing fierce ladies.

Review: Mumford & Sons-Wilder Mind

Posted on Tuesday, 5 May 2015

I can't begin to describe how much i love Mumford & Sons, so i've been patiently waiting for their third album 'Wilder Mind' to drop.
The band made it no secret that they were switching up their distinctive sound for their new album, and they kept their word. They've ditched the banjo for electric guitars, which i'm really sad about, and the folk-rock band that gained huge mainstream success three years ago is no more. The bands new sound to me, is very U2/Coldplay (minus the piano), it's very simple and straight up rock but it's a big change that fans should embrace even if it's not their cup of tea. Frontman Marcus, who previously wrote most of the bands tracks on 'Sigh No More' and 'Babel', also shared the writing responsibilities with the rest of the band for Wilder Mind.

"I think all of us had this desire to shake it up. The songwriting hasn't changed drastically; it was led more by a desire to not do the same thing again. Plus, we fell back in love with drums! It's as simple as that."

It's taken me a lot of listens to enjoy the album, but now i'm starting to get into it and i can see that it works and just feels right. Although it's different and in my opinion not their overall best release, Wilder Mind is still a great album...even though it's missing that special Mumford & Sons spark that i love.
(R.I.P Banjo)

My Top 4 tracks are:
Cold Arms
Broad-Shouldered Beasts
Wilder Mind
Only Love

Review: Sam Smith (Auckland)

Posted on Thursday, 23 April 2015

Sam Smith has been in New Zealand for 5 days now, and if you take a look at his Instagram he seems to be just a little bit in love with the country. Artists don't usually get a lot of free time to see more than just Auckland, so it's nice to see Sam enjoying his days off sight seeing around the North Island.

Last night was his first ever, and first of two sold out shows at Vector Arena, and boy oh boy he did not disappoint! I'll be honest, i only love Sam based on the singles he's released and i haven't actually had the chance to listen to his album 'In the Lonely Hour'. Going to the show without knowing most of the setlist, i wasn't sure if i'd get bored or not as i know his shows are more about his vocals. But his stunning voice is all that's needed on stage (and his epic band/back-up singers of course). Every song was sung so flawlessly,  it's not every day a singer can sound so perfect, if not better, than how they do on their album.

It was lovely to see him beaming from ear to ear after every song and being so genuinely grateful and excited to perform in New Zealand, and the crowd were just as enthusiastic. I've been to hundreds of gigs over the past 10 years and last night was one of the loudest crowds i've been in. Highlights were Leave Your Lover, Lay Me Down, La La La, Money On My Mind/Finally, and Stay With Me.

As Sam's a more ballad type of guy, it would be nice to see him again in a smaller venue. A 12,000 capacity arena kind of swallowed him up a bit, especially when his staging is pretty simple to begin with. But if you have the chance to see Sam Smith you need to go! I can guarantee you'll be blown away by his incredible performance.

Review: All Time Low (London)

Posted on Tuesday, 24 March 2015

Last Friday saw my sister Charlotte and I attending All Time Low's "One Night with All Time Low" at SSE Wembley Stadium.
This was my first time seeing a full proper set (previously I had seen them do a festival set at Reading in 2010), I had always wanted to see them live, but fate always got in the way.

Being a lot older now (with the golden era of pop punk far behind me) my sister and I opted for seated tickets. Our seats were pretty decent as we had a clear view of the stage, although nothing beats being up close and personal at the front with the band. It was amazing seeing so many younger fans singing along to all the songs (even to songs that were released 10 years ago!), we even saw a grandma in our section who had taken her granddaughter to the gig! (I hope to be as cool as her one day).

All Time Low opened up with 'Love Like War' which is off their 'Don't Panic' album and one of my favs from that album. From there we went down memory lane with 'Lost in Stereo' and ' Six Feet Under the Stars'. After playing their hit song 'Weightless' from 'Nothing Personal' we at the back were treated to an acoustic set from Mr Alex Gaskarth when he appeared on a makeshift stage by the sound booth. Here he serenaded us with one of my favourites 'Remembering Sunday' and we were even treated to Cassadee Pope coming out and doing a duet with him. He finished the acoustic set with 'Therapy' which is another fav of mine before going back on stage and playing their new single 'Kids in the Dark' (if you're a fan of ATL and haven't heard this song, I recommend you check it out) from there they played 'Guts' from their album 'Dirty Work' (and another fav of mine). Their song 'Outline' saw lead singer of You Me at Six Josh Franceshi come out and sing with the band (I was super gutted they announced their co-headline tour with each other after we had bought these tickets as You Me at Six is another band I want to see live). After playing 'Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't)' and 'Forget About It' (Which has to be my fav song from Dirty Work), they picked fans from the audience (of course they were all from the front row) to come up on stage during 'Time-Bomb'. We were treated to a mix of people, some coming all the way from Germany and Italy and one who came dressed up as a Hotdog (I can only imagine the bucketload of sweat he must have.. sweated haha). From there they played their first single off their new album 'Something's Gotta Give' (again check it out if you're an ATL fan) before leaving the stage as all bands do, to then reappear for their encore.

I briefly got excited at the prospect of possibly hearing 'Coffee Shop Soundtrack' but alas they decided to grace our ears with ' Jasey Rae' instead before finishing off the night with the first ever song I ever listened to (from All Time Low) 'Dear Maria, Count Me In'.
Slightly disappointed I didn't get to hear 'Popping Champagne' but we can't always get we want. Overall the night was fun, I thoroughly enjoyed the walk down All Time Low memory lane (even if I felt a tad old not jumping around and singing along to all the words like the young Sophie would have). Defo glad I can finally cross All Time Low off my music bucket list.

This gig was also filmed for their next DVD so if you were unfortunate enough not to attend because you weren't in the country, live abroad or just didn't go, you have the chance to experience this night from the comfort of your own home!

Their new album 'Future Hearts' is out April 2nd!

Movie Review: Insurgent

Posted on Thursday, 19 March 2015

*spoilers ahead*

I had never heard of the series when I first saw Divergent, in fact I was forced to watch the first movie simply because there was nothing else on at the time, but I ended up loving it. However the first couple of teasers for Insurgent really didn't grab my attention at all, so I was little unsure about watching the film.

The series is set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago enclosed by a large wall. The people within the wall are divided into five factions: Abnegation = selfless; Erudite = intelligent; Candor = honest; Dauntless = brave; Amity = peaceful. Some people don't fit in anywhere so they become factionless, others have traits from all factions so they are Divergent, and a threat to the government because they can't be controlled.

Insurgent picks up three days after the events in Divergent. Tris (Shailene Woodley), Four (Theo James), Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller) are hiding out in peaceful Amity when they are found and pursued by Eric (Jai Courtney) and his team, thanks to the traitor Peter. The trio head in to factionless territory where we meet their leader Evelyn (Naomi Watts) who also happens to be Four's supposedly dead mother, and she wants to build an army to overthrow Erudite which is great because Tris wants kill the Erudite leader Jeanine (Kate Winslet). Four and Tris then head to Candor to meet with the rest of the Dauntless gang where they have to prove their innocence because the evil Jeanine is blaming them for what happened in Abnegation. She's also still on a mission to gather all Divergents, but this time she needs them for testing to help her open a mysterious box from the cities founders.

I haven't read the series, but I know this is where a lot of the movie starts to differ from the novel (thanks to fans of the book freaking out about the box they don't remember reading about). All I could think about during the film were the similarities to The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner. I did like the big reveal in the box, but it just seemed too predictable. The action was great,  I didn't find myself getting bored during the two hour film, overall it just didn't really stand out to me as much as the first film, but I am interested to find out what happens next!

Let us know what you thought of the second instalment!

Review: Future Sound System

Posted on Monday, 2 March 2015

I love me some EDM, so of course I had to get myself to the last epic gig of the summer!
Future Sound System is a new festival to hit Auckland, and the little brother/sister to Australian festival Future Music.

After a huge mix up with public transport, my friends and I managed to get to the stadium about half way through Martin Garrix's set. He's the one I've been wanting to see since he dropped 'Animals' in 2013 so I was a wee bit pissed about arriving late. Luckily we got there about 2 songs before he played 'Animals' and it went off! It's so hard to believe that he's only 18 years old and yet he knows how to work a crowd better than more experienced DJ's. Hopefully I get to catch a full set soon!

I saw Afrojack at Creamfields in 2013 and all I remember is being really bored, so I wasn't really looking forward to seeing his set. But he surprised me and actually ended up being my favourite of the night! He didn't even play 'Take Over Control' (or he might of and I was just too busy dancing to notice haha) which is one of my favourites of his and I still loved it. There wasn't a dull moment in his set, he had the crowd moving and jumping the entire time. I don't know why I didn't like him 2 years ago, but I definitely have a soft spot for him now.

I also saw Avicii at Creamfields and he was so good I had to see him again at FSS. Unfortunately he played such an average set! It was fun at times but he was lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. The crowd were super pumped for him, and singing along to all his hits (except for his new single 'The Nights' and 'Levels' which was disappointing) but he just wasn't as good as the two before him.

Overall, it was an awesome night and I was actually really surprised at the turnout, especially for an EDM event. Here's hoping it's not the last time little old New Zealand get a festival like this!

Review: Foo Fighters, Auckland NZ

Posted on Monday, 23 February 2015

In 2011 the Foo Fighters rocked Auckland, literally, the show caused a very minor earthquake!
Although their recent show at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday didn't make the earth rock enough to record any tremors, they still played one hell of show!

This wasn't my first Foo Fighters show, so i knew what to expect from the legendary band who are in their 20th year together! and they were just as incredible as when i saw them for the first time 10 years ago. The New Zealand leg of the Sonic Highways tour started off earlier in the week with a few hiccups. Thousands of fans were left stuck in the queue as the Foos took to the stage in Christchurch, then their equipment truck was involved in a bad accident on the way to Auckland, which meant their charity gig at the Town Hall had to be cancelled. Luckily their stadium show went off without a hitch!

The almost 3 hour show was full of crowd pleasers and hits from every album, as well as a few covers. 'Something From Nothing' from new album Sonic Highways opened the night, which was followed by mass singalongs from a rowdy crowd to 'The Pretender', 'Learn To Fly', 'Break Out' and 'My Hero' as well as oldies 'Big Me' and 'Monkey Wrench', before ending the night with the classic 'Everlong'.

The thing i love the most about Foo Fighter shows is that they don't appeal to a specific group of people. There are young children to old couples and families who go to be blown away by one of the greatest front men in the industry. The Foo Fighters are one of the few bands around that will never disappoint live, and they don't seem to be putting a stop to their career any time soon as they promised to return to rock the Auckland Town Hall.

Review: Thriller Live (Auckland, NZ)

Posted on Thursday, 12 February 2015

Thriller Live is heading into its 6th year in London's West End and has recently been making its way around Australia and now New Zealand for a short run until the 22nd.

I attended the opening night last night and although there were a few ups and downs in the beginning, overall it was enjoyable! Thriller Live is of course a celebration of the King of Pop's work from the Jackson 5 to Michael's solo career. As the show is more of a tribute/concert it was a little hard to get into it at first because it was a journey through Michael's different music styles with different vocalists singing different songs rather than a biography with one person playing Michael.

The first hour of the show was a little underwhelming. While i was in London i went to a West End celebration at Trafalgar Square where there are brief performances from West End musicals. Thriller Live picked a Jackson 5 number and i was really impressed with the kids that were cast to play the brothers. However the kids aren't part of the cast down under which is a real shame, i think they would have really wowed the audience and made the opening extra special. After a little crowd participation the audience were starting to loosen up and get into the groove. But just as things were heating up the atmosphere died down and it continued to go up and down until the end of the first half where we were only just starting to get a taste of bigger and better things to come in the second half.

The show really does save the best till last but it is well worth it! The last half an hour of epicness kicked off with 'P.Y.T' followed by stand out performances of 'Beat It', 'Smooth Criminal', 'Man in the Mirror', 'They Don't Care About Us', and 'Earth Song'. The show is packed with all of MJ's biggest hits, but i was disappointed that 'You Are Not Alone' and 'Remember the Time' were left out.

Besides a few dancers not putting in as much effort into the choreography as others during some songs, the cast were fantastic. All the notes were hit every time and Sean Christopher was mesmerising as the main MJ dancer (and one of the lead vocalists), particularly during 'Smooth Criminal'. Alex Buchanan was my personal favourite lead vocalist, he is scarily good at what he does, at times i thought i was listening to the real MJ singing live in front of me.

Half way through i wasn't too sure if i made the right decision to go but at the end of the night i left feeling satisfied. Thriller Live won't be everyones cup of tea but as a huge Michael Jackson fan i loved watching this tribute to one of the greatest performers of all time. It's an emotional reminder of just how great he truly was and that there will never be anyone like him again, but his legacy will live on.

Thriller Live runs until Sunday February 22nd at the Civic Theatre in Auckland, NZ.
Tickets are still available from www.ticketmaster.co.nz

Review: Fifth Harmony- Reflection

Posted on Friday, 6 February 2015

Fifth Harmony are continuing the X Factor tradition of runners up becoming more successful than the winners. The girls, who originally auditioned as solo artists, came in third place in the second season of the U.S version of the hit reality show. Two years later they have finally released their long awaited debut album 'Reflection'.

Following the huge success of their lead single 'BO$$' mid last year and their second single 'Sledgehammer' later in the year, I was expecting big things from the girls first album, and Reflection does not disappoint!

I was quite surprised with how much I loved the album considering I wasn't the biggest Fifth Harmony fan at first (but they've grown on me quite a bit since their album dropped). I love the blend of pop, dance and club tracks to hip hop and R&B, I only wish that they had added a few more ballads to the mix because the girls have killer vocals!

There is not one song on the album that I can fault. 'Worth It (feat. Kid Ink)' is the third single which will be released next month, is one of the stand outs on the album and has a bit of a 'Talk Dirty' vibe to it. But my three favourite tracks are definitely 'Reflection', 'Top Down' which is such a great car jam, and the closing track 'Brave, Honest, Beautiful (feat. Meghan Trainor)'.

I love the female empowerment in the songs. Fifth Harmony are one of the leading girl bands right now spreading positivity and inspiring girls everywhere to be confident, which is very important in this day and age.

Girl Power!

Review: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Posted on Thursday, 5 February 2015

If Quentin Tarantino met James Bond you would get Kingsman: The Secret Service.
Spy films are not my cup of tea, films based on comic books are, so i was a little torn between seeing this movie or not.

I had little knowledge about the comic/film beforehand and i was initially drawn to it because of the director Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass and X-Men: First Class). It's a little too early to say that the film is my favourite of 2015, but right now it takes the cake!

Kingsman is loosely based on The Secret Service comics. The film follows a group of secret agents, who after the death of one of their spies, must each find a new protege to undergo several tests and one will ultimately become a Kingsman. Harry Hart played by the very suave Colin Firth takes Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin (newcomer Taron Egerton) under his wing. Eggsy didn't have the best upbringing, and although he is smart and talented he spoils his chances by mixing with the wrong crowd. Harry sees this as an opportunity to guide Eggsy to do better things, like saving the world, which looks to be doomed thanks to Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) and his bad ass bionic assistant Gazelle (Sofia Boutella).

Kingsman: The Secret Service is the perfect balance of comedy and action with a bit of violence on the side, and i was not expecting to walk away loving it as much as i did. From the moment it started i was completely engrossed until the credits started rolling. The cast are brilliant (and easy on the eyes!), and the newcomers are even more fantastic.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is out now in The U.K, and released today in New Zealand and Australia. The movie will be released over the next few weeks for the rest of the world.

Review/OOTD: Our House Festival

Posted on Tuesday, 2 December 2014

Shirt: burnout Alexander Wang
Trousers: fake leather from Temt
Bum bag: Ebay (heaps to choose from!)
Shoes: London Rebel from ASOS

Last Friday night Our House Festival hit New Zealand. Every year DJs like Calvin Harris, David Guetta, and Zedd perform and this year it was Steve Aoki and Skrillex who headlined.
For the event i definitely did not want to wear heels or a dress but i still wanted to keep things light as i knew there would be a lot of sweaty bodies and a lot of dancing was going to go down.
I settled on all black everything because you can never go wrong with an all black outfit.
Lipstick is shade 20 from the Kate Moss Rimmel London range and choker is also from ASOS.

What So Not and MK were also on the lineup but i only showed up in time to see the two headliners.
The legendary Steve Aoki was the first headliner up and he made sure that we didn't miss out on the whole Aoki experience so there were cakes, an inflatable boat, and champagne! Steve Aoki played all his big hits from Phat Bram, Freak, Boneless with an awesome intro from Simon Says by Pharoahe Monch, Free The Madness, Rage The Night Away, and he ended his set with crowd pleaser Pursuit of Happiness. He definitely knows how to get the crowd super pumped and ready for more madness throughout the night.
Skrillex opened his set with his track My Name Is Skrillex, it took a few minutes for me to get into the set because it was so loud i couldn't hear anything from the ringing in my ears but eventually i got into it. Skrillex was a lot more heavy than Steve Aoki, or as my friend put it a lot more 'dirty' but he was just as good and as fans of his from his days prior to being a DJ and fronting From First to Last to now he knows to work a crowd and did not disappoint. Following his opener Skrillex played First of the Year (Equinox), Bangarang, Wild For the Night, Promises, Summer, Rock N' Roll, and Cinema to name a few.

As a massive EDM fan i'm so happy EDM is getting bigger here. Now there's a new summer dance festival hitting Auckland called Summer Sound System where Avicii, Martin Garrix, and Afrojack are going to play next year. Haven't seen Martin Garrix yet but i've been dying to for awhile and i can't wait to see the other two again on home soil!

Review: The Hunger Games-Mockingjay Part 1

Posted on Thursday, 20 November 2014

Sometimes living in the southern hemisphere has its perks. Because we're ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to big movies like The Hunger Games series little old New Zealand gets the first look! I have just finished watching Mockingjay in the cinema and WOW!
Look away now if you don't want to be spoiled!

Mockingjay isn't my personal favourite of the trilogy. As I was rereading the book I forgot how slow it was, especially part 1, but the movie was so brilliantly done and without anything major being left out that the two hours just flew by. Some people didn't understand the reason behind splitting the short book into a two part finale but it was necessary in order to keep things flowing at a good pace. If you haven't read the book i'm sorry to inform you that there is no actual Hunger Games in part three of the trilogy, but it is still darker and more emotional than the two before it.

As the story builds up to the climax in part 2 most of it is based underground in district 13 (thought to be destroyed by the capitol during the first rebellion), if we're not in district 13 we're watching Katniss explore what is left of the districts in the outside world of Panem which is facing a revolution. Almost all of the movie is exactly or close to what is in the book so fans will not be disappointed! One little thing that wasn't included (that didn't need to be in the movie but would've been nice to see) is Katniss finding her prep team locked away in district 13. There are also new scenes which are in my opinion some of the best scenes in the movie and enhance the story so well. We get a brief look at district 7 (who provide lumber) and how they fight back against the peacekeepers in two VERY epic scenes, one that also crosses over with Katniss' song 'The Hanging Tree' which will give you goosebumps!

The film ends in a similar way to Catching Fire but about three chapters into part 2 of the novel and I have to say, Josh Hutcherson does an incredible job at portraying hijacked Peeta! in fact, all of the cast both old and new do an amazing job at portraying their characters.

Who else can't wait another year for part 2?

Review: One Direction-Four (Deluxe Edition)

Posted on Tuesday, 18 November 2014

LGC have been looking forward to this album's release since 'Fireproof' was given out as a free single! Four is very different to anything One Direction have done before and it really works for the boys who are entering a new stage in their musical lives! Four is more Indie-Pop than pure Pop and we ain't complaining, this is the best sound for them and definitely their best album to date. We're hoping this album will finally put the naysayers to rest and see these boys as more than just X Factor by-products. However we were a little disappointed with the deluxe tracks, compared to the rest of the album they're quite average. We've read that the boys all contributed to the song 'Change Your Ticket' but the rest were written for them (aside from Liam having a writing credit on 'Illusion'), which we found odd as we thought the boys would want to further showcase their talent seeing as the standard album was so brilliant!

Overall we give Four a solid 4 out of 5!

Review: Calvin Harris- Motion

Posted on Friday, 7 November 2014

One of the biggest DJ's in the world released his fourth album at the beginning of the week and i've finally gotten round to giving it a listen. If you're looking for something fresh in the EDM scene this won't be the album for you. Motion is very much like Calvin's previous record 18 Months, full of radio and dance anthems which are sure to please the fans.
Tracks like 'Under Control', 'Blame', 'Outside', 'Slow Acid', and the anthem of the summer conveniently titled 'Summer' were released prior to the album and are all massive hits, which is why i personally had high expectations for Motion and i wasn't disappointed.
Motion's opener 'Faith' features Calvin's vocals and is the perfect track to lead into the rest of the album which also features a verrrry slowed down and interesting tune 'Ecstasy'. The guests that feature are Haim, Gwen Stefani, Big Sean, Ellie Goulding, John Newman, Tinashe, All About She, and Hurts as well as fellow DJ's and producers Ummet Ozcan, R3hab, Firebeatz, and Alesso.
Stand outs on the album (besides those that have already been released) and tracks that i can't wait to get my dance on to are:

It Was You
Overdrive
Open Wide
Dollar Signs
Burinin

Overall my rating for Motion is 3 and a half out of 5 because although it does have some great tracks it does lack a little bit of originality, and some of the collaborations with the bigger names in the industry are a tad underwhelming.

Review: Top 4 Fave Dark Lips

In keeping with the halloween theme, Sophie thought it would be good to review her 4 favourite dark lipsticks.

The lightest colour out of the lipsticks mentioned I thought i'd add it as for a nude colour it's colour is quite deep. When applied it looks more of a dark coffee brown. It's easy to apply and feels smooth which is probably down to the Shea Butter incorporated into the lipstick. The lasting appeal is good, keeping touch ups to a minimum. I don't wear this colour as much as I like but as winter is fast approaching here in the UK I think this will be replacing my nude lipsticks.
RRP: £4.49

2, Topshop Lip Bullet: Wine Gum
After seeing a review from Lily Melrose on the Topshop Lip Bullet (or maybe it was Crayon) I just had to get one for myself. As she had recommended the red colouring and I was already in possession of a red lipstick, I chose Wine Gum as I had previously lost my Barry M lipstick of a similar colour. The application is smooth, but you do have to concentrate when you are applying to make sure you don't end up looking like Coco the Clown. After looking around on the internet it seems as if this colour is sold out.

A redder version of N40 this lipstick is part of Collection's Gothic Glam range. I was originally only meant to pick up this lipstick in Scorned but as the lipstick was under £3 I couldn't not say no. Like Fond Farewell it's is easy to apply, however the few times I have worn it, the lasting effect is not as long.
RRP: £2.98

I had always wanted to try and pull off a purple lipstick and after seeing this colour on Krizia I bit the bullet and bought it. To be honest I haven't worn it as much as I'd like but that's down to me only just experimenting with colour lipsticks. I love my nude coloured lipsticks! When I have worn it I love it, although the lasting effect as mentioned above is less desirable, and I have to make a conscience effort to make sure my lips appear fuller as I find darker lipsticks can make my lips look thinner then what they are.
RRP: £2.99
