Lifestyle: My Trip to Amsterdam

Posted on Wednesday, 22 April 2015

Last week a group of uni friends and I went to Amsterdam for a bit of an Easter vacay!
It was one of those trips where nothing was really planned which was perfect, as there was no set schedule and we all had the comfort of coming and going as we pleased.
I was the first to arrive out of our group followed promptly by the group that left from Bristol and Stansted, we ended up meeting the rest of our group at our hostel later as their flight got in much later than ours.
Our first day was mainly exploring and taking in the beautiful canals that Amsterdam has to offer.
Our second day was a beaut of a day, we started it off by going to the Heineken Museum and then splitting up for lunch. I grabbed a pizza slice and chilled in a lil park area with Jess, Matt, George and Adrian.
The third day saw temps reaching 22 degrees celsius so we thought it was the perfect day to check out Vondelpark and the I Amsterdam sign, where we stumbled upon this cool fountain that you can see in the video.
Our final day we explored the canals via a canal cruise and those of us with later flights checked out the fun fair that had been installed whilst we were there.

Hope you all enjoy the video, apologies again for the cock up with filming. I've quite enjoyed this venture into vlogging so if I do another one i'll make sure I don't make the same mistake filming twice!

Travel Tuesday: Queenstown

Posted on Tuesday, 21 April 2015

Queenstown is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand, and rightly so. It's home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country and full of adventure!
If you're looking to head to the adventure capitol of New Zealand, here are a few musts!
  •  Firstly you need to do the Nevis Bungy and Swing, the biggest and baddest in the world. It's a 40 minute drive to the location, followed by a ride out to the platform in a cable car. The bungy is a cool 134m drop. You can do the swing backwards, forwards, upside down, alone, or with a friend!
  • If jumping from a height is as terrifying for you as it is for me, you might prefer the Kawarau Zipride to glide along the air rather than drop. You can also go solo or buddy up, or go with 6 of your friends at once! If you don't mind getting a little wet you should try river sledging down the rapids of the Kawarau River.
  • If you're after some more action packed adventures, hop on the Skippers Canyon Jet tour.
  • If you're looking for a boat tour that's a little different, try the Hydro Attack- a submersible watercraft that's in the shape of  a shark that'll take you on a tour of Lake Wakatipu. You'll leap up 18 feet in the air and dive down 5.
  • Of course checking out Milford Sound is a definite must. You can hike around, you can bike around, you can kayak, you can cruise, you can also take a helicopter ride around. Personally i would do a kayak or cruise!
  • Head to Arrowtown, the former gold mining town. Here you can go gold panning, go on tours around historic buildings and through the Chinese Miners Settlement, there are museums, galleries, wineries, and more!
  • 5 minutes from central Queenstown you'll find a gondola that will take you above the town and to the Skyline complex where you can see breathtaking views, have a bite to eat, enjoy a Kiwi Haka Maori performance, and then ride back down in the luge.
  • If all the adrenaline packed activities haven't worn you out, head to the fear factory New Zealand's 'scariest' haunted house.
  • For all you Lord of the Rings fans you can also take an Offroad 4 x 4 Wakatipu discovery of the rings. You'll see the White Mountains, Minas Tirith, Pillars of the Kings, Gladden Fields, Ford of Bruinen, Warg attack, Exodus of Edorus.
There are heaps more thrills to experience in Queenstown, such as endless amounts of skiing and snowboarding locations and options. At the end of the day head to Fat Badgers Pizza for massive New York style pizzas and the famous badger beer. What's better than pizza and beer?

Travel Tuesday: Dublin

Posted on Tuesday, 17 March 2015

In honour of St. Patricks day we thought this weeks Travel Tuesday could highlight one of Ireland's popular cities!

I've always wanted to go to Dublin, but haven't quite managed to make it over there yet. Maybe later this year after I graduate uni and have a bit more time on my hands!
If you get a chance to go however make sure you check out these attractions:

  • No trip to Dublin would be complete if you didn't go to the Guinness Storehouse with the ultimate Guinness tasting experience and 360 degree views you'd be crazy not too!You even get a pint of Guinness which is included in the ticket price!
  • Phoenix Park is a popular place to go and is an urban park located 2-4km west of the city centre. Inside you can find the Dublin Zoo, the Papal Cross and many different monuments like the Wellington Monument.
  • Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison turned Museum and held many Irish revolutionaries who were later executed by the British and the Irish Free State.
  • National Musuem of Ireland- Archaeolgy features displays on prehistoric Ireland and seasonal displays from around the world such as Egypt, Cyprus and the Roman world.
  • Feel free to check out Dublin Castle which was the powerhouse of Ireland, Trinity College Library which is the largest library in Ireland and St Patrick's Cathedral which is the largest church in Ireland to further get a feel for the rich history in this city.
  • The National History Museum and Botanical Gardens are always a fan favourite of mine, the National Botanic Gardens especially would be a lovely attraction to do in the summer.
  • If you can feel free to grab a ticket to a game in Croke Park.
  • Check out St. Michan's vaults with it's mummified corpses and then after take a wander down to the Jameson's Distillery.
I'm sure there's loads more you can do in this wonderful Irish city and I can't wait to experience it for myself! Love to hear your recommendations if you've ever been to this city!

Happy St. Patricks Day!

Travel Tuesday: New York City

Posted on Tuesday, 10 March 2015

Around this time last year LGC went on a little holiday to the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, so i'm dedicating this weeks Travel Tuesday to New York City!

First of all, if you want to hit all the main spots you might want to grab a New York City Pass, which will get you into the Empire State Building, Natural History Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a choice between the Rockefeller Center or the Guggenheim Museum, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island or Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, 9/11 Memorial and Museum or Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Best of all you can skip the ticket queues!

Sophie and I chose the Rockefeller Center, but if you're trying to pick between the Top of The Rock and Empire State I suggest Empire State for photos as the building will block your photos of the city from the Rockefeller. We picked the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island rather than the cruises, but make sure you double check the Ellis Island boat time! We missed the last one by a few minutes, I think it was around 4pm. We also chose to go to the 9/11 memorial (the museum was yet to open at the time), it's a very emotional experience especially because it's still quite fresh in everyone's minds, but it's definitely a must see.

Here are a few other things to check out in NYC:

  • The Museum of Modern Art to check out original pieces by artists such as Lichtenstein, Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh, Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Monet. While you're in the area take a photo at the famous Love sculpture.
  • No trip to NYC is complete without a walk around Central Park (The Natural History Museum and Metropolitan Museum right by the park, one east and one west). While you're walking, running,  rollerblading, or cycling, stop by Strawberry Fields for the John Lennon memorial, and then check out the Alice in Wonderland and Hans Christian Andersen sculptures.
  • When you're down by the Central Park Zoo take a snap outside the Plaza Hotel aka that hotel from Home Alone 2! And then head to the Fao Schwarz toy store where you'll find an amazing collection of dolls, legos, stuffed animals, and play on the famous big piano!
  • A MUST is definitely Lindy's for their world famous New York cheesecake- you might want to order one slice between two, the slice is huge! If you're still feeling hungry go to the Dominique Ansel Bakery for a cronut.
  • For your main meals (and more dessert!) go to Little Italy and Chinatown! For a snack grab a bite at one of the many Hot Dog and Pretzel stands along the road.
  • Tickets to musicals and plays can cost an arm and a leg, occasionally you can get really good deals but you have to be very quick. But you can't not see a broadway show in NYC. Also, a lot of live tv shows are recorded in NYC more info on how you can be in the audience here.
  • Check if there are any events happening at Madison Square Garden. We were lucky enough to experience a New York Knicks basketball game.
  • A lot of movies and tv shows also film around the city! If you're a NBC and HBO fan, check out their stores for heaps of merchandise and studio tours.
  • When you're in Times Square head to American Eagle Outfitters and make a purchase and get your photo taken which will then be shown on a massive screen in Times Square for your 15 seconds of fame!
  • If you're a book lover you need to check out the The Strand Bookstore, Forbidden Planet for comics and Sephora is a must for all your makeup goodies!
I could go on and on, but hopefully this is a great start for you to plan your trip to the city that never sleeps!

Travel Tuesday: Brussels

Posted on Tuesday, 3 March 2015

The other week my boyfriend and I decided to celebrate our anniversary by going to Brussels. It had always been a place he had wanted to go, and as a lover of travel I'm keen to explore more of the world. So this week's Travel Tuesday will be more of a "hey this is what I got up to on my trip" rather than our usual programming.

We caught the Eurostar bright and early as we wanted to make as much use of our 3 days away. This was my first time travelling on the Eurostar and I have to say I really enjoyed my time (although I was asleep for most of it), it was nice knowing that my ears weren't going to have to be repressurised (or whatever it is that happens when you fly). The weather was less than desirable, with it starting to rain as we left the train station, however I felt this added to this quaint Belgium city. After getting lost a few times we finally made it to our hotel- Pantone Hotel , A cute little hotel 20mins walk away from the city centre.
After leaving our bags at reception we decided to stroll and explore our surroundings till check in at 3pm. The rain was less than ideal but this didn't stop us, we grabbed a hot chocolate to warm us up at the Workhouse Cafe (although we did ask for chocolate milkshakes, maybe there was a language barrier). After strolling around for a few hours we realised that we had been walking away from the city centre (typical us) by this time though it was time to check in. I was pretty exhausted so ended up having a nap to try and regain some energy.
That night we headed into the city centre to explore and see all the different bars and cafes Belgium had to offer. We saw the Grand Place on our way into the centre, it was so pretty at night as it was all lit up, which made for a nice effect.
For dinner we went to Drug Opera which was built in the 20th century and is one of the most famous pubs in Brussels. I can vouch for the spaghetti bolognese (although a heads up, if you aren't a massive cheese lover or have issues with cheese, tell them when you order as the plate comes out with a healthy portion of cheese on top). After dinner we wandered about before finding Brussels famous statue Manneken Pis- to be fair this was by accident as it was on route to a pub we had heard good reviews on.

The next day saw us checking out the comic strip art museum, where we learnt how comics were made and saw works from Hergé (creator of Tin Tin) and Peyo (creator of The Smurfs). That night we went to Delirium Cafe as it had been recommended as a place to go by pretty much everyone we knew who had already been to Brussels. We were lucky to get a seat as by 5:30pm the place was starting to get pretty full. They have a massive selection of beers to choose from, I quite liked the Floris Ninkeberry.

The next day we headed home back to London and in typical fashion the weather was beautiful. My boyfriend and I both agreed that we would have loved to have had another day, even though we think we pretty much saw everything, that extra day would have been lovely. Especially as we knew there was a Tin Tin museum an hour's train ride outside of the city that we would have loved to have gone too.

Have you guys been to Brussels? What were some of your favourite sights and sounds?

Travel Tuesday: Edinburgh

Posted on Tuesday, 3 February 2015

One of the highlights during my European adventures was Scotland, mostly because when i was there i felt like i was home. I fell head over heels in love with Edinburgh and i was kicking myself for not going sooner as i could easily picture myself living in the beautiful city.

Here are a few of my Edinburgh recommendations!
  • Edinburgh Castle! The castle is spectacular obviously, it's on a big hill with stunning views of the city. I recommend buying fast track tickets because if you don't time your arrival right you could be stuck in a queue for a while. While you're waiting you should definitely grab an ice cream from the truck outside the entrance!
  • Like London, Edinburgh have their own dungeons too! It looks like it's exactly the same as the London Dungeons, except you travel through Scotland's horrible history instead.
  • If you're after more scares Edinburgh host a couple of creepy night tours around the city. If you're up for it head on a city of the dead ghost tour of the old underground vaults. For a less scary but equally as interesting time, check out Mary King's Close.
  • If you're a Harry Potter lover you must visit the Elephant Cafe where J.K. Rowling began writing the series and Balmoral Hotel where she ended it.
  • If you don't mind climbing up a massive hill check out Arthur's Seat for more stunning views of the city. Make sure you wear comfortable footwear because it's quite a hike to the top!
  • If the indoors appeals to your more definitely check out the National Museum of Scotland, it's free!
  • If you're in Scotland in August head to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which is the world's largest arts festival.
  • While you're there you can also check out The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is also held in august (and it also has nothing to do with tattoos!)
  • You can't NOT go to Scotland and not go on a Whiskey tour. If you're not a fan of alcohol then head to any fast food chain or super market and grab yourself an irn-bru, it's the Scottish creaming soda but it's oh so delicious! and it's the only soft drink that out sells coca cola in Scotland. You MUST also try the national dish Haggis, perhaps don't ask what's in it until after you've eaten it. I recommend finding somewhere that cooks Chicken stuffed with Haggis omnomnom.
If you have a few days to kill i definitely recommend taking a Haggis Tour around Scotland. Their office is located on the Royal Mile and the tour guides are brilliant! If you're struggling to think of New Years plans you should consider going to Edinburgh for Hogmanay, one of the biggest New Years celebrations in Europe that you do not want to miss.

Travel Tuesday: Amsterdam

Posted on Tuesday, 27 January 2015

Amsterdam (or The Dam) was one of my favourite places I visited when I embarked on my month long coach trip around Europe 6 years ago.
It's a city where anything goes and is famous for it's Red Light District and its lenient views on "smoking"

Check out some below some of interesting sights The Dam has to offer!
  • Anne Frank's House is located in the Prinsengracht district and is a must see for all travellers. This musuem dedicated to the wartime diartist is an eye opener to the struggles that partook during that awful part of history. As well as the the aftermath of what happened after the concentration camps were disbanded.
  • If you go during Christmas the Christmas Markets are something to behold, a very magical experience. You'll find lots of traditional dutch food stalls, plenty of hot chocolate and handmade craft stalls (no clogs though).  Make sure to you check out the Christmas light installations as well.
  • Amsterdam is not only home to endless amounts of delicious food shops, but also many brilliant Vintage shops that Krizia fell in love with...in particular one called Episode!
  • Vondelpark is a must see landmark, it's a 47-hectare urban park in Amsterdam-Zuid.
  • Amsterdam has a variety of musuems including one for Van Gogh and Rembrant. Whislt you're there make sure to check out the famous I AMSTERDAM sign located just behind the Musuemplien.
  • Canal cruises are a popular way to enjoy the sights of this beautiful dutch city via the river, some provide meal and nibble options with a choice of drinks.
  • If you're feeling adventurous and doing something out of the ordinary Amsterdam is famous for it's Red Light District and within there you can find numerous peep shows and sex shows. I, myself went to one with my coach group and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. If you are interested in this I can recommend The Casarosso and Hospitalbar
  • While you're in the Red Light District our tour guide recommended checking out the infamous Grasshopper which is a steak and smoke house, even if you can't go in make sure to see it at night as the building lights up green and is truly a lovely sight.
  • And of course you have to check out the busy Dam Square filled with locals and tourists! There are various food stalls, restaurants and shops a plenty! Such is the popularity of Dam Square that you might even have to wait for a seat at one of the many cafés and bars
  • Amsterdam is also famous for it's delicious Chinese food and as someone who has eaten at the Sea Palace I can vouch for how good the quality of food was!
Amsterdam was one of my favourite places on my tour and I may even be going back in April so I'm looking forward to revisiting some of the places mentioned!

Travel Tuesday: Reykjavik

Posted on Tuesday, 20 January 2015

Iceland is one of the most beautiful and coolest countries in the world. Reykjavik is the capitol and largest city in Iceland, although it's actually not that large there are many things to see and do and a majority of the tours depart from the centre.

Here's a list of Reykjavik musts!
  • Check out the Lebowski Bar! It doesn't matter if you're a Lebowski fan or not, this little burger joint and bar has a great atmosphere. If you're after McDonalds or any other fast food chain you're out of luck! In Reykjavik you'll only find Subway. If you're feeling adventurous there are many restaurants along the high street that offer whale and puffin for dinner!
  • Some of the best musicians hail from Iceland so if you're a music lover you must go and check out this amazing record store 12 Tonar. They also give away free espresso and tea.
  • The Hallgrímskirkja church is one of the cities main landmarks which can be seen from almost everywhere. For 600ISK you can go to the top for stunning views of Reykjavik. Although you could probably get away with not paying if you're on a budget, no one was monitoring the entrance or exit when I visited.
  • At night visit the Imagine Peace tower, a collaboration with Yoko Ono. The tower of light beams have Imagine Peace inscribed on the wall in 24 different languages.
  • The Harpa Conference and Concert centre is one of the newest additions to city. Sitting at the edge of the water this beautifully designed building is quite a sight. Not too far down from the Harpa is the Sun Voyager which resembles a Viking ship.
  • While you're down this part of Reykjavik make sure you stop by the re-established old harbour. From here you can go on scooter tours, and book whale and puffin tours.
  • Check out the National Museum of Iceland for all of Iceland's interesting history. There are also dozens more museums and art galleries around the city which are just as interesting. The Icelandic folk love their arts and culture.
  • If you have some time to kill on the weekend check out the Kolaportid flea market. Inside you'll find anything and everything. Make sure you pick up a delicious Icelandic hot dog nearby from Baejarins Beztu Pylsur!
  • Some tours that leave from Reykjavik (through Iceland Excursions) that I recommend you go on are The Northern Lights tour. You'll get a delicious cup of hot chocolate and yummy Icelandic Donut. The Golden Circle tour will take you through Þingvellir National Park, to Gullfoss watefall and Geysir hydrothermal area. The Blue Lagoon tour will get you into one of the most famous geothermal spa's in the world. If you're a Game of Thrones fan make sure you head out on one of many tours around the country visiting all the famous filming spots.
If you're brave enough to face the cold, i'm talking extreme cold, head over in the middle of winter. There's ice and snow everywhere and the days are short and the nights are long, but it makes everything look even more spectacular!

Travel Tuesday: London

Posted on Tuesday, 13 January 2015

London is home to over 9 million people including being the adopted home of one half of LGC so it seemed only fair to have this Travel Tuesday dedicated to this buzzing metropolitan city.
As London is such a massive city I've narrowed down some of my favourite things to do.

Here's a list of things you can do whilst you're visiting:

  • Camden Markets is one of my FAVOURITE places in London, I'd say I go there at least twice a year. Located in the heart of Camden, the markets are held both inside and outside with independent vendors selling their trade. No Camden Market trip is complete without getting some Bang Bang chicken and eating it on refurbished scooter stools.
  • National History Museum situated at South Kensington explores the animal world, dinosaurs and what makes humans tick. Right next door to that is the Science Museum where you can learn all about mans journey to space, see some real moon rock and how we have evolved in terms of techonology throughout the centuries. There's also fun interactive games to further delve into the behavioural traits of humans.
  • The West End! I LOVE LOVE LOVE musical theatre and plays and have managed to see many shows thanks to London's West End. Some of the shows currently playing are The Lion King, Wicked, Billy Elliot, The Book of Mormon, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Woman in Black, Ghost Stories, 39 Steps etc, also there are countless ticket agents competing to give you on the day great value tickets.
  • Madame Tussands can be found 2 minutes from Baker Street Station and can be a fun day out for the kids seeing their favourite celebrities in wax form! The wax museum also ends in a fun lil ride through Britain's history where at the end you get your picture taken, both times that i've gone the pictures have come out hilariously good.
  • South Bank always has something happening whether it be a German influenced winter festival or a summer festival with rides and open aired bars, This area itself is nice as it's right by the river Thames and is a nice walk all on its own. Right by South Bank as well is the London Eye, London Dungeons, and the Aqualife Aquarium.
  • Abbey Road is a very popular Tourist spot that sees hundreds of people trying to recreate the infamous Beatles album cover.
  • If you're fans of Peter Pan then you'd want to head to Kensington Gardens to check out the famous Peter Pan statue
  • Buckingham Palace of course has to make this list. I've been here far too many times but each time I'm still in awe. From the beautiful fountain right outside the gates to the Palace herself. I definitely suggest heading there early/having it the first thing you do that day so you can get a good spot for the changing of the guards. It really is something to see. There's also times when the Palace opens up to the public. I've yet to go to that but it's on my list. There's also nothing quite like seeing the Palace at 3am after a night out.
Now of course these are just a handful of things you can do whilst you're in London. Honourable mentions have to go the Tate Modern, Millenium Bridge, Tower Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, Hyde Park (especially in summer as you can go swimming in the lake), London Zoo, the Shard and so much more!

Wishlist Wednesday!

Posted on Wednesday, 3 December 2014

KRIZIA

As i love to travel this would be the best travel accessory for me. Although it's a bit small it's small enough to use as carry on luggage which is great because if you have a really tight flight connection you can just hop on this bad boy and get to your gate in half the time. I've seen plain scooter suitcases before but i love this one because of all the detail on the front.
I first got introduced to Sriracha while i was living in London and have been addicted ever since. I'm not much of a fan of hot sauce but there was just something about this one that got me hooked. Carrying around a bottle in my bag might be a little weird so these Sriracha 2 go bottles are perfect for every day use!
I would love to own this Alexander Wang bag one day! i've been in love with it for years because i love my black bags and gold studs but i just cannot pay hundreds of dollars for the real deal. Luckily i found a knock off in Camden Markets while i was living in London so for now i can just pretend like i own one!

SOPHIE

There's something about the Burberry coats that i've always loved. Maybe it's because they look so soft and comfortable, or the hint of tartan that pokes out, or the fact it's an ultra luxe label.. But i've always dreamed of having one. I found this style when I typed in Burberry Coats but it appears to not be available to purchase anymore, however I stumbled across a lovely all black coat with python textured sleeves, and of course the classic old faithful, sand coloured jacket (with a wool cashmere undercollar YES PLEZ!). Either one will do!

I've been contemplating getting one of these for a while now. It would make blogging so much easier on the go, as I wouldn't have to lug my macbook around with me when I go to uni or work. It would also be a good way to quickly write down notes for uni (even though i'm in my last year) and would be a good travel companion so I can still keep in touch, but not be limited to a small iPhone screen.

3. Vivienne Westwood Necklace
Like the Burberry Coat I've always wanted a Vivienne Westwood Necklace. To me the orb necklaces reminds me of a cool funky planet and as a lover of space I feel like I must own this. Either one of these will do quite nicely! They now come in Gold, Silver, Rose Gold and a type of Gunmetal Silver.
